A crash round is a single multiplier climbing from 1.00x, and your only call is when to bank it before the line dies. The decision happens live, usually inside a few seconds, against a number that is rising as you watch. Auto-cashout lets you pre-commit the call, but it is still one decision, and the round runs on the server’s schedule whether you bet or not.
Mines is a 5×5 grid of 25 tiles. You choose how many mines to hide, from 1 to 24, then click tiles one at a time, and after every safe reveal the interface shows the profit on the next tile against the profit you could bank now. Mines works by sampling without replacement, what statisticians call a hypergeometric process. With M mines hidden, your first click is safe with probability (25 – M) / 25, and after k safe reveals the next click is safe with probability (25 – M – k) / (25 – k). Every success shrinks the pool of safe tiles faster than it shrinks the board, so the odds of the next click get worse precisely because the last one went well.
Nothing like this exists in crash. You can sit through a 30-second crash round and the instantaneous danger never moves; you can clear 19 tiles in Mines and turn an 88% opening click into a coin flip. The player’s own successful choices are what worsen the next decision’s odds, and that escalation is the format’s signature.

🧠 The balloon experiment Mines recreates
Mines is, structurally, the casino version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task, the experiment psychologists built to measure exactly this kind of push-your-luck behaviour. The parallel is close enough to be useful, because the task’s known failure modes are the format’s known failure modes.

The Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), introduced by Lejuez and colleagues in 2002 in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, has participants pump a virtual balloon. Each pump adds a small amount to a temporary bank, and each pump raises the chance the balloon bursts and wipes that bank.
Swap the words and you have Mines. A pump is a tile reveal, the temporary bank is your unbanked profit, and the burst is the mine. Schonberg and colleagues, reviewing the task in 2012, singled out its escalating tension as what separates it from one-shot chance gambles, and that is precisely the line that separates Mines from crash: one format is a static gamble decided in a moment, the other builds its pressure choice by choice.
The task earned its standing because it predicts behaviour outside the lab. Lejuez’s team found that riskier play on the balloon tracked self-reported addictive, health and safety risks beyond what standard questionnaires explained. Its documented failure mode is over-pumping, where a run of successes makes stopping feel harder exactly as the odds deteriorate, and in Mines that failure mode has a name every player knows: one more tile.

📊 RTP, speed and the price of an hour
At the top studios the two formats cost exactly the same per dollar wagered; the gap opens lower down the market and in how fast each format moves money. Stake Crash and Stake Mines both run at 99% RTP, BC.Game matches that on both formats, and Spribe runs Aviator and its own Mines at a fixed 97%, again identical across its pair. Below that tier, Mines spreads wider than crash. 🎯 Volatility: an explicit dial vs an implicit target
Both formats let you choose your variance without moving your expected return; Mines just prints the dial on the screen. In crash the dial is your cash-out target: a 1.2x target wins often and small, a 10x target rarely and large, and every target returns the same expectation per dollar staked.
In Mines the dial is the mine count, 1 to 24, with the reveal count as a second lever. 📝 For the record: the often-repeated claim that 24 mines gives the game’s biggest win is wrong. Twenty-four mines pays the largest single click, but Stake’s theoretical maximum of 5,148,297x comes from a balanced board, 13 mines with all 12 safe tiles cleared, and payout caps bite long before such figures anyway: Spribe caps wins at 10,000x or €10,000, Hacksaw at 10,000x.

Both formats come in provably fair and certified-RNG builds; what differs is what the provably fair version commits to. A provably fair crash game commits to a single hidden number, the crash point, before bets close, which means the house cannot move the round’s ending once it sees how much money is riding on it. A provably fair Mines game commits to an entire hidden array, the full mine layout, before your first click, which means the board cannot dodge your picks: the mines were placed before you ever touched a tile.
Stake and Spribe publish player-verifiable seed schemes on both their crash and their Mines titles. Hacksaw and Galaxsys run certified RNG instead, tested by independent labs such as GLI and eCOGRA, which is a real assurance but not one you can re-derive round by round. Crash is multiplayer by construction; Mines is solitary by construction. Every player in a crash round rides the same multiplier to the same crash point, with a live feed of stakes and cash-outs, chat and leaderboards wrapped around it. Spribe’s chief product officer has described the format as having “a shared heartbeat”, and while none of that social layer touches the maths, it is central to why crash rooms feel like events.
Mines gives you your own board, your own layout and your own outcome, with no shared result to gather around.
