Mines Probability and Multiplier Calculator

This calculator gives the real odds behind every reveal in Mines. Choose the number of mines on the 25-tile grid and it returns, for each pick, the chance that tile is safe, the chance of surviving that far, and the fair payout at Spribe’s 3% edge. It is for anyone who wants to know what a 5-mine game pays per unit of risk before clicking the first tile.

Multipliers shown use a 3% house edge (matching Spribe Mines). Actual multipliers vary by game and operator. The house edge means the expected value of every reveal is negative regardless of mine count.

🔢 How to read the results

The table has one row per reveal. The safe chance is the odds that this particular pick avoids a mine, given that every previous pick did. The cumulative column is the chance of getting this far from the first click. The multiplier is what a game at 97% RTP pays for cashing out at that row, and the verdict marks whether the row is better or worse than even money.

The three cards summarise the mode. The coin-flip reveal is the first pick where cumulative survival drops below 50%. The max multiplier is the payout for clearing every safe tile, and the chance to clear is its inverse, scaled by the RTP. With 3 mines, pick 5 is the coin flip at 49.6% survival and 1.96x; clearing all 22 safe tiles pays 2,231x and happens once in 2,300 games. The Mines game page has the same table for the common mine counts.

💡 Key insight

The multiplier column is 0.97 divided by the survival column, on every row and at every mine count. There is no pick where Spribe’s 3% goes missing and no mine count that lowers it. Stake’s Mines uses 0.99 instead of 0.97, which is why it pays 2,277x rather than 2,231x for the same 3-mine clearance.

📊 The maths behind it

With m mines on 25 tiles, the first pick is safe with probability (25 – m)/25. Each safe reveal removes one safe tile from the grid but no mines, so the k-th pick is safe with probability (25 – m – (k – 1))/(25 – (k – 1)). Cumulative survival is the product of those fractions, and the fair multiplier at a 3% edge is 0.97 divided by the cumulative survival. The multiplier for clearing the board is 0.97 multiplied by the number of ways to place the mines, which is 25 choose m.

Worked example with 3 mines:

PickSafe chanceCumulative survivalMultiplier at 3% edge
188.0%88.0%1.10x
287.5%77.0%1.26x
387.0%67.0%1.45x
486.4%57.8%1.68x
585.7%49.6%1.96x
22 (board clear)25.0%0.043%2,231x

The safe chance falls on every row because safe tiles are used up and mines are not. That is the mechanism that makes late picks expensive: by pick 20 in a 3-mine game, half the remaining tiles are mines.

🎯 What it cannot tell you

It cannot tell you which tile is safe. The layout is fixed by a hashed server seed before your first click, which is why every Mines predictor is a scam and why the question in the rigging guide has a checkable answer. It also does not apply operator maximum-win caps, which can cut the top rows on high mine counts, and it assumes the 97% version; other studios ship Mines at lower RTPs.

It says nothing about which mine count is better, because none is. Every count pays 97% of the money staked over time. The count sets how quickly the survival column falls, which is a volatility choice, and the same structure runs the hazards in Chicken Road, compared side by side in the Chicken Road versus Mines article and against Plinko in Plinko versus Mines.

The bottom line: Use the cumulative column to pick a cash-out row you can live with, and treat the multiplier as the fixed price of that row. A 3-mine game cashed at pick 3 is a 67% chance of 1.45x. A 24-mine game is a 4% chance of 24.25x. Both cost 3 cents per euro or dollar.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Which mine count gives the best odds?

None. At Spribe’s 3% edge every mine count from 1 to 24 pays 97% of stakes over time. The count changes how fast the survival chance falls and how large the multipliers get, which is a volatility setting, not a value setting.

Why does the safe chance fall with each pick?

Because each safe reveal removes a safe tile from the grid and leaves every mine in place. With 3 mines the first pick is 22 safe out of 25, the second is 21 out of 24, and by the twenty-second pick it is 1 safe out of 4.

Is the 24-mine game a coin flip?

No, it is far worse than a coin flip and pays accordingly. One safe tile in 25 is a 4% chance, and the fair payout at 3% edge is 0.97 × 25 = 24.25x. The expected return is the same 97 cents per euro or dollar as every other setting.

Can I use the table for Stake Mines?

Yes, with one change. Stake’s Mines runs at 99% RTP, so replace 0.97 with 0.99 in the multiplier column. The safe-chance and survival columns are identical, because the grid is the same 25 tiles.
