Both games belong to the same branch of the family. Neither is a true crash game: there is no shared round, no rising line and no timer. Each is a private sequence of bank-or-continue decisions, and each pays out the inverse of your cumulative survival odds with the studio’s edge removed. Here is where they line up and where they split.
🔢 The maths: one formula runs both games
Start with Mines, because its formula is explicit. With m mines on 25 tiles, your first pick is safe with probability (25 – m) / 25. Each safe reveal removes one safe tile and one tile from the board, so the k-th pick is safe with probability (25 – m – (k – 1)) / (25 – (k – 1)). The chance of surviving k picks is the product of those terms, which works out to C(25 – m, k) / C(25, k). The fair multiplier is one divided by that survival chance, and the paid multiplier is the fair one times the RTP: 0.99 on Stake, 0.97 on Spribe.
Now Chicken Road. The four modes are usually described by a single loss figure: Easy 4%, Medium 12%, Hard 20%, Hardcore 40%. Those numbers are correct for the first step only. They are 1 in 25, 3 in 25, 5 in 25 and 10 in 25, which is precisely the first-pick loss chance in Mines with 1, 3, 5 and 10 mines. The step counts confirm it: Easy has 24 steps (25 minus 1 hazard), Medium 22 (25 minus 3), Hard 20 (25 minus 5), Hardcore 15 (25 minus 10). And the multipliers settle the question. Chicken Road’s first-step payouts are 1.02x, 1.11x, 1.22x and 1.63x, which are 0.98 x 25/24, 0.98 x 25/22, 0.98 x 25/20 and 0.98 x 25/15. Its full-clear payouts are 24.5x, 2,254x, 52,067x and 3,203,385x, which are 0.98 x C(25, 1), 0.98 x C(25, 3), 0.98 x C(25, 5) and 0.98 x C(25, 10). Every published number on the game fits the Mines formula at 98% and nothing else.
The third column is the test. If Easy really cost a flat 4% per step, surviving all 24 steps would happen 37.5% of the time and the full-clear payout at 98% RTP would be 2.6x, not 24.5x. The game pays 24.5x because a full clear is a 1-in-25 event, and it is a 1-in-25 event because there is one hazard somewhere in 25 lanes and you have to pass 24 of them. The per-step danger climbs from 4% on the first step to 50% on the last, exactly as it does at 1 mine.
📝 For the record: InOut Games does not publish a formula for Chicken Road, and most descriptions, including earlier ones of ours, present the mode percentages as a constant loss chance per step. The published multiplier ladder rules that out: a flat 4% could never produce a 24.5x full clear. What the reviews call the mode’s “chance of losing” is the first-step figure, and the game’s per-step odds thereafter follow the same sampling-without-replacement pattern as Mines. Whether InOut’s server draws the hazard positions in advance or checks each step against the conditional probability makes no difference to what you face; the two are the same distribution.

📊 Surviving five steps: the worked comparison
Because the survival maths is shared, the fairest comparison is the same run on each game and each build. Five steps is a useful benchmark: it is short enough to be a normal cash-out point and long enough for the edge to show. The table gives the chance of getting there and what each build pays if you do.
Read across any row and the survival column is identical for both games. The only thing that changes is the payout, and it changes by the house edge and nothing else. On Medium, a five-step run is a 49.6% event; Chicken Road pays 1.977x, Stake 1.997x, Spribe 1.957x. Multiply survival by payout and you get 0.98, 0.99 and 0.97, the RTP of each build. That is the whole comparison in one line: the games take the same risk from you and hand back slightly different fractions of it.
💡 Key insight
The odds of surviving any run are set by the hazard count and the board size, and both games use 25 positions. Chicken Road Medium and Mines at 3 mines are the same bet. Choosing between them is choosing between a 2% edge, a 1% edge and a 3% edge on an identical gamble, plus the cap and the regulation that come with each.
Over a session the edge gap is small per round and large in aggregate. At €/$1 a step-five cash-out on Medium, 1,000 rounds cost roughly €/$20 on Chicken Road, €/$10 on Stake Mines and €/$30 on Spribe Mines. 🎮 Mechanics: what a round looks like on each
The formula is shared; the experience is not. A Chicken Road round runs left to right along a single road. You press Go, the chicken advances one lane, the multiplier printed on that lane locks in, and the next lane’s multiplier is already visible. You have no say over which lane comes next. Rounds are player-paced and usually last 8 to 30 seconds. Autoplay support varies by build: some versions offer an auto-cash-out target, others do not.
A Mines round opens with a mine count and a 5×5 grid. You click any tile, it reveals a gem or a mine, and after every gem the interface shows the profit on the next tile against the profit you can bank now. The choice of which tile to click is yours, and it is worth being clear that the choice is cosmetic. Every unrevealed tile has the same chance of hiding a mine, so a corner is no safer than the centre, and a “pattern” is just an order. Spribe and Turbo Games add auto-pick modes that repeat a set of tiles at speed; on turbo, a round can finish in 2 to 5 seconds.
So the practical differences are order, pace and count. Chicken Road removes tile choice, which removes the illusion of skill along with it. Mines gives you the grid, which is why it attracts more rigging accusations and more predictor scams than any neighbouring game, a point we cover in is Mines rigged. Both games show you the next multiplier before you commit, so neither has an information advantage over the other. The claim that Chicken Road is distinctive for displaying the next multiplier in advance is true only against crash games; against Mines there is no difference.

Both games run at the speed you set, which makes hourly cost a function of your own clicking. Thirty deliberate rounds an hour at €/$1 on a 98% build cost about €/$0.60; 300 rounds on auto cost about €/$6. Chicken Road’s animation sets a minimum round length that Mines on turbo does not, so Mines is the easier game to lose money quickly on at equal stakes.
⚙️ Volatility control: four presets against 24 mine counts
Here the games differ in a way that matters. Chicken Road gives you four settings. Mines gives you 24, and every one of them is a valid point on the same curve. If you want the equivalent of 2 mines (first-step loss 8%, full clear at 300x fair), Chicken Road cannot offer it. If you want 24 mines, a single 4% shot at 24.75x on Stake, Chicken Road cannot offer that either; its highest first-step risk is Hardcore’s 40%.
The table shows how the danger moves within a round at the four shared settings. The numbers are the loss chance on a given step, given that you have survived the steps before it. They apply identically to Chicken Road and to Mines.
Two things follow. First, the last step of any setting is the worst bet in the round by a wide margin: on Hardcore it is a 91% loss chance for a payout that only makes sense because the cumulative odds of reaching it were 1 in 3.3 million. Second, the presets in Chicken Road are not a limitation for most players, because 1, 3, 5 and 10 hazards cover the range people actually use. They are a limitation for the two groups at the edges: players who want a low-variance grind between 1 and 3 hazards, and players who want the one-tile lottery at 20-plus. Both groups need Mines.
On Mines the settings have one documented quirk. Michael Shackleford’s analysis of a 1-mine build found the realised return varies sharply by stopping point at that single setting, falling well below the headline RTP in the middle of the board. From 2 mines upwards the return is flat wherever you stop, and Chicken Road’s Easy mode, which is the 1-hazard case, should be treated with the same caution. 🏆 Max wins and the caps that replace them
Both games advertise multipliers that cannot be paid. Chicken Road’s Hardcore ceiling of 3,203,385x is real arithmetic, but the game is cash-capped at about €/$20,000 per round on the original, and some operators set it lower. At a €/$1 stake that cap binds at 20,000x, which is under 1% of the way to the headline figure. At €/$10 it binds at 2,000x, which Hardcore passes at step 11 of 15 (step 10 pays 1,067x, step 11 would pay 3,200x).
Mines has the same shape with different numbers. Spribe caps payouts at 10,000x, so its full clears at 5 mines (51,536x after the 3% edge) and beyond can never pay in full. Turbo Games’ cap is reported as a €1,000 cash ceiling, which at any meaningful stake makes its high-mine settings pointless. Stake’s cap is set at operator level and is high in absolute terms, which is why the 24-mine setting, a 4% shot at 24.75x, is the one the predictor channels like to film. The two settings that can actually pay their full multiplier on every build are the low ones: 24 mines or Chicken Road Easy, where the top payout is 24x to 25x and no cap is anywhere near.
🛡️ Fairness and regulation
On fairness the main builds of both games are in the top tier. Chicken Road uses SHA-256 with a server seed, a client seed and a nonce; the hashed seed is published before the round and any past round can be checked from the bet history. It is also independently RNG-certified. Stake Mines derives its layout from HMAC-SHA256 over the same three inputs with a Fisher-Yates shuffle of the 25 tiles, and Spribe Mines uses a SHA-256 commit-reveal scheme. In all three the hazard positions are fixed before your first step or click, which is why every “predictor” for either game is a scam; the Mines version of that scam is dissected in our Mines predictor guide. The exception on the Mines side is Turbo Games, which markets its build as provably fair but publishes no seed scheme and no verifier, leaving the claim untestable.
On regulation the two games sit in different markets. Spribe holds an MGA licence (MGA/B2B/562/2018) and a UK software licence that was suspended on 30 October 2025 and reinstated on 30 March 2026, so Spribe Mines is a game that can appear on UK-licensed sites, even if its availability after reinstatement has been patchy. Hacksaw’s Mines is on the UKGC list too. Chicken Road’s studio, InOut Games, operates as IOGr B.V. in Willemstad, Curacao (company number 161532) and holds an Anjouan licence (ALSI-202506032-FI2). It has no UKGC licence and no MGA licence, and Chicken Road does not appear on UK-regulated sites. Any page claiming otherwise is fabricated. The 99% Mines builds, Stake and BC.Game, are crypto-casino originals and are not on regulated European sites either. So the regulation question splits the same way it does everywhere in this family: the best return sits on the least regulated platform, and the only regulated option is the 97% Spribe build. A player who needs a UK-licensed game has one choice between these two, and it is Mines.
⚠️ Scam alert: Both games come with a sequel or clone that runs at a worse price. Chicken Road 2.0 is 95.5% RTP against the original’s 98%, more than double the edge, and it is marketed with a bigger headline multiplier. Several Mines builds run operator-set RTP as low as 93%. In both cases the in-game info panel is the only reliable place to read the live figure, and the lobby will not flag a low one.
🎯 Verdict: which should you play
Because the survival odds are identical at the shared settings, the decision comes down to four things: the edge, the settings you need, the cap, and where you are allowed to play.
On the edge alone, Stake Mines wins at 1%, Chicken Road is second at 2%, Spribe Mines third at 3% and Turbo Games last at 5%. That ordering holds at every step of every setting, because the payout at any point is the fair multiplier times the RTP and nothing else. If you have access to Stake and are choosing purely on price, Mines at 99% beats Chicken Road at every stopping point. If you do not, Chicken Road at 98% beats every Mines build outside the crypto originals, including Spribe’s.
On settings, Mines is the more complete game. Chicken Road’s four presets map to 1, 3, 5 and 10 mines and leave out everything in between and everything above 10. If you want 2 mines, 7 mines or 24 mines, only Mines has it. On caps, Chicken Road’s €/$20,000 cash limit is generous for small stakes and restrictive at Hardcore with a €/$10 stake, while Spribe’s 10,000x cap is a multiplier limit that binds the same way at any stake. On regulation, Mines is the only one of the two with a UK-licensed build.
The bottom line: Chicken Road and Mines are the same bet with a different interface. Play Stake Mines if you can, for the 1% edge and the full range of settings. Play Chicken Road if you cannot, for a 2% edge that undercuts every non-crypto Mines build, and stick to the original rather than the 95.5% sequel. Play Spribe Mines if you need a UK-licensed game and accept the 3% edge as the cost of that. And on either game, ignore the headline multiplier and check where the cap sits at your stake before you choose a mode.
